He completed his schooling and higher education in Assam and Karnataka. He studied at Hojai College and later pursued a Master of Business Administration degree from M. S. Ramaiah Institute of Management Studies, Bangalore.

Ataur Rahman is engaged in business and entrepreneurial activities. He is a partner and director associated with industrial units including A B Stone Crusher and A B Paver Industry. He has also been involved in the tyre business as the former owner of Rahman Tyres.
