Poet Chaturbhuj was an Indian poet and musician from Banachari village in Palwal district of Haryana. Poet Chaturbhuj is remembered for his exceptional contribution to devotional music and poetry, composing melodious and heart-touching bhajans that continue to be sung even today.

Early Life

Poet Chaturbhuj was born in the village Banachari in a Brahmin family. His exact date of birth is not known, but it is estimated that he was born around 1867–68. His father was Pt. Balram, and he had two brothers, including his elder brother Pt. Kunjilal, with whom he shared a close bond.

From a very young age, Poet Chaturbhuj displayed remarkable talent in music. At around the age of 6, he began learning singing and musical instruments. Under the guidance and influence of Shri Dayalu Kripalu, he became a skilled singer and instrumentalist by the age of 10–12.

Education

Poet Chaturbhuj received traditional learning along with musical training from an early age, focusing primarily on devotional music and poetic expression.

Career

Poet Chaturbhuj was the first person in his village to introduce harmonium playing, marking a significant contribution to the local musical culture. He later mastered the sarangi and became widely known for his musical performances.

Blessed with poetic talent, he composed more than 100 devotional bhajans, known for their deep emotional appeal and spiritual essence. His works gained popularity across regions, and his singing style attracted wide recognition.

His passion for music was so profound that he dedicated his entire life to it and did not pursue other occupations, including farming.

Personal Life

Poet Chaturbhuj had two sons, Pt. Kevalram and Pt. Lekhraj, and three daughters, Pt. Javitri, Pt. Sukhdevi, and Pt. Radheshyam. He was known for his sweet and melodious voice, which contributed greatly to his fame.

Later Life and Death

A significant incident in his life was a theft at his home, which deeply affected him. Following this, his health began to decline.

At the age of around 55–56 years, on 4 March 1923 (Chaitra month, Pratipada, Samvat 1980), Poet Chaturbhuj passed away.

Poet Chaturbhuj is remembered as a great poet and musician whose devotional compositions continue to inspire and resonate with audiences. His legacy lives on through his timeless bhajans and his contribution to Indian devotional music.
