He belongs to the Narang family whose roots trace back to Mandi Chuharkhana in District Shekhupura, now located in Pakistan. After the Partition of India in 1947, his family migrated to Phagwara in Punjab and later settled in Paonta Sahib in 1961.

His father, Late S. Tarlok Singh Narang, was a founder member of the Sirmour Truck Operators Union since 1975. His grandfather, S. Thakar Singh Narang, was a businessman engaged in the food grains and cloth trade.
