GOBINDA DHAR

GOBINDA DHAR is an Indian Headmaster, writer, editor, publisher and cultural organizer from Tripura, India. He is widely recognized for his contribution to education and his pioneering role in the little magazine movement in North-East India.

Early Life

GOBINDA DHAR was born on 17 May 1972 in Padmapur, Dharmanagar, in the then North Tripura district. His father, Dakshinaranjan Dhar, worked as a laboratory assistant in the education department and was also associated with theatre and book binding. His mother, Sushama Rani Dhar, was a homemaker.

After the sudden demise of his father, he faced financial and personal challenges while growing up in a large family.

Education

GOBINDA DHAR began his education in 1978 at Ratachhara High Basic School. He passed his Madhyamik examination in 1990. Due to family responsibilities and financial difficulties, he entered professional life at an early stage.

Career

GOBINDA DHAR started his career as a primary school teacher on 15 July 1991 at Uttar Ratachhara Lower Basic School at the age of 18.

Over the years, he continued his dedication to education and rose to the position of Headmaster. He is currently serving at Gajendra Kumar Amulyabala J.B School since 11 November 2023.

His expected date of retirement is 31 July 2032.

Cultural and Literary Contributions

Alongside his teaching profession, GOBINDA DHAR has made significant contributions to literature and culture.

Between 1990 and 1995, he was actively involved in Jatra (folk theatre), participating in performances alongside local and visiting artists.

He later became deeply associated with the little magazine movement and edited several publications, including:

• Srot
• Srotoswini
• Kusum
• Kobitaghar
• Banglabhasha (Path Patrika)

He also founded the Srotoswini Cultural Organization.

Research and Archive Work

GOBINDA DHAR established the North-Eastern Little Magazine Manuscript Preservation and Research Centre.

The work formally began in 1995 at Ratachhara and later expanded to Halaimura, Kailashahar and finally Kumarghat in 2003. The centre has collected approximately 40,000 to 50,000 little magazines and manuscripts.

The archive has become an important resource for researchers, writers and scholars from India and Bangladesh. Many eminent poets, writers and researchers have visited the centre.

Events and Initiatives

GOBINDA DHAR has organized several major literary and cultural events, including:

• Little Magazine and Book Festivals
• Poetry conferences and cultural programs in Kumarghat

In 2016, he organized an International Little Magazine Festival in Agartala, which was inaugurated by then Chief Minister Manik Sarkar. The event included participation from India and Bangladesh.

He also played a role in establishing organizations such as Matribhasha Mission and Anandadhara in 2012.

Editorial and Publishing Work

GOBINDA DHAR has been actively engaged in editing and publishing literary works.

His initiatives include:

• Srot (published in 2001)
• Kusum
• Kobitaghar (2007)
• Banglabhasha (2012)

He also contributed to the development of mini magazines such as Srot F and Srot.com.
