SuVi Eye Hospital & LASIK Laser Centre is a 25-bed, technology-driven eye institute in Kota, Rajasthan, co-founded by Dr. Suresh Kumar Pandey and Dr. Vidushi Sharma on 5 February 2006. About Dr. Suresh Kumar Pandey

Dr. Suresh Kumar Pandey is a left-handed ophthalmic surgeon, author, cyclist and motivational speaker. Born in a humble family rooted in freedom-fighter heritage, he rose from rural Rajasthan to global recognition in ophthalmology. Early spiritual and nationalist influences came via RSS and Gayatri Pariwar. Despite financial hardship, he topped district merit lists, completed MBBS at Jabalpur, MS at PGIMER Chandigarh, and advanced research/clinical fellowships in the USA and Australia.

Dr. Vidushi Sharma, MD (AIIMS, New Delhi), FRCS (Edinburgh, UK), is a world-renowned LASIK and Oculoplastic Surgeon, motivational author, educator, and healthcare leader. She is the Co-founder and Director of SuVi Eye Institute & LASIK Laser Centre, Kota, Rajasthan, India.

A graduate and postgraduate from the prestigious All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, she completed her FRCS (Ophthalmology) from the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh (UK). Mohna is my birthplace in the Kundal area and this village is situated 30 km from Rawatbhata in Chittorgarh district. During childhood, I studied in the dim light of a lantern due to a lack of electricity. I dreamed of becoming an eye doctor to bring light into the eyes of blind patients. There was a school in Mohna village till class five and I went to a nearby village Eklingpura barefooted for secondary education. Mohna village is surrounded by mountains and situated in the lap of nature. It was an important center of revenue collection during the princely state. Due to a lack of political will over time reasons and strong willpower, this 800-year-old Mohna village was deprived of roads, secondary schools, hospitals, etc.

  I had the opportunity to visit our old house at Mohna and receive the guidance and blessings of my father during my birthday. It was the same house where I spent 14 years of my life and studied for the Pre-Medical Test (PMT) under the lantern.

  Symbolic photo of during my first train journey in 1978, I was sitting near the window. The train was stopped due to a red signal before Kanpur Central. During that time there were no iron grills in the train windows. Taking advantage of this, some kidnapper tried to put his hand through the window and pulled me out of the train. When my grandfather shouted and held my legs, the person who wanted to kidnap me immediately ran away and disappeared within a few seconds. By God’s grace, I was saved.

After taking the introductory sessions, the seniors used to take us to the coffee house to eat. They also helped the junior students in every possible way. That time. There used to be tape recorders to listen to songs which added to the glory of every party.

  The Center for Ocular Therapeutics and Biodevices, established by Professor David J. Apple, became most renowned in the field of intraocular lens research. To be a part of the 'Apple Korps' and learning under the guidance of Professor Apple as an international fellow was the most ambitious dream for the young ophthalmologist. I also started learning with full dedication. I dedicated myself to research and worked till late on weekdays and used to come to the Centre even on weekends. My colleagues used to say jokingly, 'Dr. Pandey lives here.’ as I was spending most of the time there. My career in ophthalmology was transformed by staying there and learning and it became one of the most memorable experiences of my life.

  I was living in an apartment in a building located about 50 steps away from the Storm Eye Institute, Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston, South Carolina. More than 30 Indians used to live in this building. We used to organize two-hour Satsang every Sunday morning from 10 AM to 12 PM. I would cook Poori and Pakora during this Satsang. Mr. Richard Pal and his wife also used to come to participate in this Satsang, who was associated with Radha Swami. After the Satsang, we would eat vegetarian food.

  During my stay in the USA, I would cook pooris and pakoras. Gradually, my cooking skills got better and better, and I was able to prepare food for twenty–thirty people with ease. I was appreciated by my colleagues and they fondly called me ‘Pandey Ji Poori and Pakora wale’. Some of them even suggested I start a food stall chain by the same name.

  I participated in the Gayatri Ashvamedh Yagya in Atlanta, USA, on July 9, 2000. I got the opportunity to meet Dr. Pranav Pandya, Head of Shantikunj, Haridwar, and All World Gayatri Parivar.

  I, together with my colleagues, used to play (football) or golf on Sundays. We followed the maxim called 'Work Hard, Play Hard' while working in the USA.

  Photograph of my Toyota Corolla car accident that happened on September 08, 2002, in Salt Lake City, USA. I was driving to attend a lunch with some of my colleagues. But a nagging headache kept troubling me. I took a painkiller after lunch and got ready to drive back. After fifteen minutes of driving, I dozed off for a few seconds. My foot was on the accelerator and the speed was 80 miles per hour. The next thing I knew, my car had crashed into a pole on the roadside and then into a tree. The airbag flung open and I noticed an unusual smell in the cabin. My car was badly damaged but I did not have even a scratch. I was wearing my seatbelt and by the grace of God, I did not have a scratch. I was resolved to have safe driving, a seatbelt, and sound sleep in life after this accident.

  I learned the art of cataract surgery, IOL research, and the art of delivering an effective oration from my mentor Professor Randall J. Olson, Chairman of John A. Moran Eye Center, Salt Lake City, USA. I also took guidance from him before going for my first live surgery. I joined the faculty (instructor) at the John A. Moran Eye Center, University of Utah in July 2002. Dr Olson came to Salt Lake City airport to pick me up and my colleague Dr Liliana Werner. During that time he was the 'Chief Judge' of the American Society of Cataract and Reactive Surgery (ASCRS) film festival. While going back to my hotel, I asked about the secret of winning the award in the ASCRS Film Festival. He told me ‘Dr. Suresh, have you ever gone fishing? Have you seen fish being caught?' The most important link in fishing is the 'hook' in which fish is caught. Professor Olson explained to me that every surgical video submitted for the Film Festival should have a special message, a special story, or a 'hook' through which the story of the film is showcased and can become an award-winning film.

I was a left-handed surgeon and asked Dr. Milverton How can I do surgery with both hands. He suggested that I record and video every eye surgery. By observing these videos, I can catch mistakes and learn. I followed his advice and started recording videos of all eye operations. He also suggested to use my right hand to brush and make empty circles and triangles. At one time, I used to draw circles and triangles and write my name with my right hand. Within a month I started doing some surgical things with my right hand and ultimately significant progress was made towards performing surgery on both hands.

  My mentor Professor Frank A. Billson served as Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology, University of Sydney, Australia. at the Sydney Eye Hospital for four decades. He laid great emphasis on tissue respect for delicate eye tissue. Dr Vidushi and I got the opportunity to meet Professor Frank Billson during the AIOS-APAO international conference held in Hyderabad in the year 2013. Prof Billson gave credit to swimming for staying fit and energetic even at the age of 92 years.

Shri Om Birla (current Lok Sabha Speaker) was the chief guest and Professor Supriyo Ghosh (Chief of Dr. Rajendra Prasad Eye Care Centre, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi) was the guest of honour. Dr. Amita Birla and other guests were also present.
