Chhaya Dharmadatta Patil

Chhaya Dharmadatta Patil is an Indian educationist, private tutor,writer, poet, people's representative, social worker and Dhamma Script teacher. She is best known for publishing the first book that transliterates the Marathi Nagari Script into the Dhamma Script. Through her free online and offline teaching initiatives, she has contributed to promoting awareness and preservation of the Dhamma Script among students and language enthusiasts.

Early Life

Chhaya Dharmadatta Patil was born on 30 October 1966 at Sion Hospital, Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. Her native village is Turchi in Tasgaon Taluka of Sangli district, Maharashtra.

She completed her Secondary School Certificate (10th Standard) in 1982 from Jawahar Vidya Bhavan, Chembur, Mumbai. She studied Higher Secondary Science in Vasai during 1983 and completed Class XII in Bandra, Mumbai in 1984.

At the age of 17, she married Dharmadatta Janardan Patil in 1983. Their son, Vinayak Patil, was born in 1986.

Alongside her responsibilities as a homemaker and public representative, she continued her education. She obtained a Diploma in Naturopathy (N.D.) from Thane University in 2003. Between 2007 and 2009, she completed her Bachelor of Arts degree from Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University, graduating alongside her son.

She later pursued specialised studies in Dhamma Script and Pali Language, earning:

Chhaya Dharmadatta Patil was born on 30 October 1966. She married Dharmadatta Janardan Patil in 1983 at the age of 17.

Career

Chhaya Dharmadatta Patil began her professional journey as a private tutor, guiding students in their academic studies. During the COVID-19 lockdown, she utilized her time to study the Dhamma Script, which is regarded by many scholars as one of the ancient scripts associated with Indian writing traditions.

After gaining proficiency in the script, she began teaching the Dhamma Script through both online and offline classes without charging any fee. Her mission has been to make this script accessible to learners interested in India's scriptural heritage and to encourage its wider understanding and preservation.

Literary Contributions

Chhaya Dharmadatta Patil authored and published the first book that transliterates the Marathi Nagari Script into the Dhamma Script. The publication is considered a pioneering contribution towards preserving and promoting the Dhamma Script and making it more accessible to Marathi readers.

The book has received appreciation from educational, literary, and cultural organizations, and she has been honoured with several awards for her contribution to education and language preservation.

She is currently working on another book that integrates Hindi (Nagari Script) with the Dhamma Script, aiming to further expand awareness of the script among Hindi-speaking readers.

Dhamma Script Mission

During the nationwide COVID-19 lockdown in 2020, Chhaya Dharmadatta Patil began studying the Dhamma Script through online courses. After successfully completing advanced training, she dedicated herself to promoting the script through free educational initiatives.

Since 2020, she has been conducting both online and offline Dhamma Script classes without charging any fees. More than sixty students between the ages of seven and seventy-two have completed training under her guidance.

On 10 January 2023, she coordinated and published the first modern transliteration of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar's book Mukti Kon Pathe from the Marathi Nagari Script into the Dhamma Script.

The publication was unique because it contained both printed Nagari text and handwritten Dhamma Script. The transliteration project involved twenty Dhamma Script students from twelve districts, working under her guidance to promote awareness of the script.

The online book release was inaugurated by Dr. Sangram Patil from London, who highlighted the historical importance of the Dhamma Script.

She continues to lead projects for transliterating important literary works into the Dhamma Script, including Devalacha Dharma Ani Dharmachi Devale, with the objective of preserving India's ancient script heritage.

Political Career

Chhaya Dharmadatta Patil has actively served in public life through local self-government and social service. Despite having no political family background, she was elected as Corporator for five consecutive terms from different wards in the Nalasopara–Vasai Virar region.

During her tenure, she worked extensively for civic infrastructure including roads, drainage systems, street lighting, drinking water supply, sanitation, and implementation of various government welfare schemes for citizens.

She is recognised for being elected as Corporator for five consecutive terms despite having no political family background and contesting from different municipal wards.

Social Reform and Public Service

Between 2009 and 2011, Chhaya Dharmadatta Patil extensively studied progressive literature, which inspired her to work against superstition, discriminatory traditions and social inequality. She adopted progressive principles in her personal life and encouraged others to embrace scientific thinking and social reform.

Her notable public initiatives include:

• Assisted police in identifying a telephone harassment offender in 1999 and advocated the introduction of Caller ID facilities in Vasai Taluka.
• Assisted police during the investigation of the ₹50 lakh Vasai Vikas Cooperative Bank robbery in 2004 by pursuing one of the accused.
• Helped expose abuse of minor girls in an orphanage in 2006, resulting in legal action and rehabilitation of the victims.
• Supported legal efforts in 2011 to obtain justice for the family of a murdered 13-year-old schoolgirl.
• Participated in several progressive social awareness campaigns from 2011 onwards.
• Successfully campaigned in 2012 for the removal of the derogatory locality name "Chhota Pakistan" from official electricity board records.
• Promoted environmentally sustainable cremation by facilitating installation of a gas crematorium in 2014, reducing dependence on firewood.
• Organised Satyashodhak marriages within her family during 2015, promoting equality and eliminating unnecessary rituals and social discrimination.
• Distributed books by eminent social reformers to wedding guests instead of traditional gifts.
• Personally composed three Mangalashtakas honouring national leaders and women reformers.

Literary Contributions

During the COVID-19 lockdown, Chhaya Dharmadatta Patil undertook an in-depth study of the Dhamma Script, regarded by many scholars as the mother script of several Indian writing systems. Following her research, she began teaching the Dhamma Script through both online and offline classes free of cost with the objective of preserving and promoting this ancient script.

On 10 January 2023, she published the first book of its kind that transliterates the Marathi Nagari Script into the Dhamma Script. The publication is regarded as a pioneering effort in Dhamma Script literature, as no published work of this nature had been produced in the Dhamma Script since 1836.

While numerous historical inscriptions have been transcribed and translated into various Indian languages and scripts, Chhaya Dharmadatta Patil's work is recognized for presenting transliteration into the Dhamma Script, contributing to the preservation and accessibility of this ancient writing tradition.
